  The game begins with kratos and atreus navigating the harsh three year winter following baldurs death while atreus seeks answers about his part as loki in the coming prophecy while kratos tells him to take caution.

 The duo faces a  problem with freya who seeks revenge for her son baldurs death and thor who serves odin in protecting  aesir's control, opposite to the 2018 game they free the original norse god of war tyr hoping he can persuade them to avoid the war.

Atreus often acting against kratos wishes to learn more about his heritage leading to him temporary leaving his father, kratos accepting his role as a protector rather than a destroyer leads a combined force against asgard, confronting odin and thor directly. 

The finial battle

kratos breaks the cycle of violence, surviving the destruction of asgard and helping rebuild the realms, eventually seeing himself as a respected protector rather than a hated tyrant

It then is revealed that faye, kratoss deceased wife  destroyed the original prophecy that demanded kratos's death allowing them to forge their own path

following brok's death, sindri becomes a tragic figure ultimately killing odin.

 In the end kratos finds a mural showing him being worshipped as a beloved god promising them a new role in the norse world
